Top Quotes

[Disclaimer: If you are financially savvy and monetarily inclined – No. This page does not contain a selection of “top quotes” currently trending the stock markets around the world, which you are seeking in the pursuit of becoming insta-rich. Sorry buddy, you have just encountered a 404 Error! :P]

[NOTE: This page is a work-in-progress, and perhaps always will be. It might undergo some minor changes or major upheavals from time to time. But for now, this is a good start – an assortment of quotations that are my personal favorites, move me, cheer me up with frivolous energy, or bring me down with contemplative pensiveness.]

Top/Miscellaneous Quotes:

>> “For those who believe in God, most of the big questions are answered. But for those of us who can’t readily accept the God formula, the big answers don’t remain stone-written. We adjust to new conditions and discoveries. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. We are here to unlearn the teachings of the church, state, and our educational system. We are here to drink beer. We are here to kill war. We are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.” — Charles Bukowski

From the book “The Sense of an Ending” by Author Julian Barnes:

>> “This was another of our fears: that Life wouldn’t turn out to be like Literature.”

>> “How often do we tell our own life story? How often do we adjust, embellish, make sly cuts? And the longer life goes on, the fewer are those around to challenge our account, to remind us that our life is not our life, merely the story we have told about our life. Told to others, but—mainly—to ourselves.”

>> “It strikes me that this may be one of the differences between youth and age: when we are young, we invent different futures for ourselves; when we are old, we invent different pasts for others.”

>> “When you’re young – when I was young – you want your emotions to be like the ones you read about in books. You want them to overturn your life, create and define a new reality. Later, I think, you want them to do something milder, something more practical: you want them to support your life as it is and has become. You want them to tell you that things are OK. And is there anything wrong with that?”

>> “We live in time – it holds us and molds us – but I never felt I understood it very well. And I’m not referring to theories about how it bends and doubles back, or may exist elsewhere in parallel versions. No, I mean ordinary, everyday time, which clocks and watches assure us passes regularly: tick-tock, click-clock. Is there anything more plausible than a second hand? And yet it takes only the smallest pleasure or pain to teach us time’s malleability. Some emotions speed it up, others slow it down; occasionally, it seems to go missing – until the eventual point when it really does go missing, never to return.”

>> “History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.”

Absolutely spot on! Yet, despite all its shortcomings, how I love this subject! 😀

    1. Yep, I am a keen student of History’s fables and foibles as well. History as a subject, has a potent effect on highlighting both the best and worst of Human Nature through it’s fascinating tales of power-structures, socio-political shake-ups, individual and collective heroism, and Machiavellian Machinations of certain characters!
